Summary
The Electrical Project Engineer supports projects from design through installation and start-up. Responsibilities include preparing electrical and controls documentation, coordinating procurement of parts and components, supporting site commissioning and validation, and managing schedules, risks, and budgets for assigned workstreams. The role requires strong communication, and effective collaboration with internal teams, vendors, and clients.
Job Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain electrical design deliverables, including single-line diagrams, cable schedules, panel schedules, electrical layout drawings (2D and 3D), bill of materials, and checkout/validation documents.
• Prepare installation specifications, scopes of work, and RFQs for contractors and vendors.
• Integrate controls between machines and process equipment; understand power and control needs for motors and instrumentation across different industrial area classifications.
• Plan, schedule, and track assigned tasks and milestones, managing risks, issues, and changes for your scope.
• Procure all necessary parts and components for projects.
• Support installation coordination at client sites, interface with contractors, and enforce site safety requirements.
• Apply working knowledge of industrial power and controls applications, motors, VFDs, instrumentation, and interlocks.
• Adhere closely to both National and Canadian Electrical Codes.
• Perform basic quantitative and data analysis to support decision-making and reporting.
• Maintain awareness of budget and schedule constraints, and complete assignments on time.
• Build effective relationships with cross-functional teams and client stakeholders.
• Prepare clear status updates, technical summaries, and presentations for project reviews.
• Adhere to Buhler + Scherler procedures, quality standards, and documentation practices.
• Protect client and company confidential information.
• Identify and recommend process improvements and best practices.
• Approximately 25% travel to client sites for surveys, installation support, and commissioning.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• 2+ years of relevant experience in electrical project engineering, installation, and start-up within industrial environments (e.g., manufacturing, food & beverage, or similar).
• Required: 2-year degree in electrical engineering or closely related field.
• Preferred: 4-year bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
• AutoCAD and AutoCAD Plant 3D.
• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Microsoft Project or similar scheduling tool.
• Proficient in reading and producing electrical drawings and control documentation.
• Strong troubleshooting and commissioning aptitude in the field.
• Clear written and verbal communication; ability to tailor messages to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Collaborative, proactive, and accountable; comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
• Exposure to validation/testing protocols (FAT/SAT/IQ/OQ).
• Familiarity with food and beverage industry standards and hygienic design considerations.
